How did you get interested in habits?
- Goes back to childhood, grow up a lot of tension with habits, change your behavior, optimizing your behavior and habits to do & not to do
- Bing an adult, really interested in helping people be happier and healthier, people's behavior
What does it mean to be happy and healthy?
- Different for different people. For me, connecting to nature.
- I moved out of silicon valley in about 2001 because I just feel like it was dehumanizing me. I surf every morning, get in the ocean everyday. And that's really important for me to start & end my day.
- Nature is the foundation of being happy and healthy.
If we give people the right information, it'll cause behavior changes, I don't think it's true, can you walk me through?
- Tiny habits & boot camp: information alone does not reliably leads to sustained behavior change.
- Just giving somebody data about their sleep or about how many calories or about whatever wasn't going to add up to be a thing that could creat lasting change in most people's lives.
- Specifying the behavior and make it easier for people to do, these two things map the behavior model which is behavior happens when 3 things come together at the same moment: motivation, ability and prompt. So if you give information that specifies the behavior well, and then give people more ability, then you have I think the most important thing in changing behavior. Be specific and make it really easy to do.
Make behavior easier to do?
- How to make things easier to do - the pack person model (for design)
- 3 approches:
- Train the person, the person gets more capable, you skill them up (changing the person, most people don't want to be trained)
- Redesigning the environment or the context to make it easier to do, you put tools or resources into somebody's context (changing the environment)
- Take the behavior and you skill it back to be super tiny. (change the action to make it tinier)
Environmental change? How do we set up an environment to make better decisions?
- Hard one. A theory or framework or model of environment or context is in need.
- It's not about the landscape has changed but about my perception of the landscape has changed. One way we can change the environment is to change our perception of it.
